[glow=gold,2,300]Why can't I do it?[/glow]
There she was, a young pegasus, only a year old, unable to fly more than a couple of feet. This was to be expected of course, being that she was orphaned at an age of only five months. She never had anyone to teach her how to fly. Her name is Risika. She is a gorgeous palomino color, with a flaxen, nearly white mane and tail, four stockings, and a bald face. She had never actually talked to another horse...no, she had never actually met another horse. She attempted to fly again, but with the same outcome; bruised knees. She let out a frustrated whinny, calling to someone, anyone to come to her side.

Kiarra noticed a Pegasus filly in the lush grasslands. The beautiful young filly whinnied back to the other filly's call. Kiarra had a sleek ebony coat with white feathered stockings, a white star on her forehead, and a black pearly horn. Her black wings were tucked close to her slender body, and her white tail swished away a few flys. Although unlike her white tail, she had a raven-black mane and forelock.
Kiarra cautiously trotted out from behind a small bush she had been grazing by, and halted by the younger filly's side. "Hi, I'm Kiarra." She announced, dipping her head in greeting. Then, noticing the other filly's struggle, she said. "You were doing pretty well. I didn't learn to fly until just about a month ago, when I was 11 months old. You just need to get a good breeze, and a smooth, running start."
The beautiful young WU began to gallop foreword, long, slender legs moving swiftly through the plains. Then she leaped high into the air, front legs tucked in close to her body, and spread her wings out. They weren't very big, but big enough to carry her small body through the air. Kiarra flapped hard and quickly, gaining altitude on a warm summer breeze. Then she stopped and hovered in the air, looking at the other filly. "See? I'm sure you'll get it with some practice." She said confidently, descending back down to the ground and landing once more beside the young Pegasus.

[glow=gold,2,300]I...can try again I suppose...By the way, I'm Risika.[/glow]
She pawed at the ground impatiently. She walked off to start, flowed beutifully into a jog, and then finally worked up a good canter. She ran for a moment, spread her wings, and leaped into the air...and immediately crashed back to earth, turning head over heels, and ruffling her feathers.
She laid there for a second, the wind knocked out of her. She had gotten slightly higher than before. She stood up, shook herself off, and looked at Kiarra.
[glow=gold,2,300]See? I'm hopeless...[/glow]

"Of course you're not hopeless Risika! I've been teaching myself to fly for months now, and only perfected it about a month ago. You are so much better than I was, and like I said, practice makes perfect." Kiarra said, walking over to the Pegasus and smiling reassuringly.

Risika smiled, but wasn't sure what else to say. She had never been a very social creature, never really had any social contact.
[glow=gold,2,300]Are...are you a part of a herd?[/glow]

Kiarra's smile faded, and she answered quietly, "No. I'm a loner. My parents died when I was only a month old." Her bright emerald eyes seemed to dull slightly. But soon returned their glow. "So...are you a loner too?" Kiarra asked, almost shyly.

[glow=gold,2,300]I am. My parents were killed when I was five months old. Have you always been alone? Have you had any friends?[/glow]

"I'm sorry to hear that." Kiarra said. Then to Risika's last two questions, she replied, "Pretty much. I don't have any other family that I know of, although I have met a few horses here and there. I did make one friend, although we were attacked by a mountain lion. I managed to get away, but she..." the WU didn't finish the sentence, tears beginning to swell up n her emerald orbs. Kiarra shook her head, clearing her thoughts.

[glow=gold,2,300]Don't cry. At least you have had friends...you're the only other horse that I've ever actually met...I'm sorry about your parents, and your friend.[/glow]
Risika got closer to her and offered a consoling nuzzle. Then she stepped back, and gave a weak smile.

Kiarra looked up at her new friend and smiled. "Thanks." Then changing the subject, she asked, "So, you've really never met any other horses before me and aside from your parents?" Her black mane waved gently about in the warm summer breeze. The sun shone brightly, making Kiarra's black coat stand out.

Risika shook her head.
[glow=gold,2,300]Nope, never. I've always been alone, since my parents died anyway...Want to go for a run?[/glow]

Kiarra smiled at Risika's suggestion. "Sure!" the filly said happily, trotting off in a random direction. She looked over her shoulder at the Pegasus. "C'mon!" She called with a giggle.

Maybe she couldn't fly, but boy, could she run. Risika stood in place for a moment, letting Kiarra get a head start. Then she bolted. In a matter of seconds she was right next to Kiarra. She was merely a blur of gold and white. Risika could jump, too. She turned suddenly, and leaped over a log, clearing it by many feet.

Kiarra was surprised by the filly's speed, but Kiarra herself was probably one of the fastest filly's alive. She leaped foreword, and had soon reached the log. Instead of jumping the entire thing such as Risika had, she leaped up onto the log. Then she pushed off with her powerful hindquarters, and leaped high in the air, flapping her wings a few times until she was just behind her friend. Kiarra then fell from the sky, landing gracefully on all four hooves, and began to gallop. She quickly passed Risika, taking long and powerful strides.
She smiled as they entered a small pine forest, and showed off her endurance skills. Kiarra suddenly turned a sharp left, weaving between two trees. Every now and then she'd check over her shoulder to make sure the Pegasus was following. She slowed down a bit, letting her friend a minute to catch up with her.

Stopping was a mistake. Risika's endurance was just as good as anything, and she had followed easily. She nearly ran into Kiarra, but jumped to the side, and sped past her, farther into the trees.
